About Us

Whidbey CAREs is a nonprofit organization started in 2022. Our goal is to bring a Ukrainian Refugee Family to the PNW.

It costs an estimated $2,500-3,000 per refugee — at least $10,000 for a family of four, and even more for a larger family. Our goal is to fund this family and help them as they integrate and settle into our community.

Once the family arrives, CAREs members will help integrate them into Whidbey Island. The group will help them obtain food, clothing, housing, transportation, and employment; connect them with any legal and medical services they might require; and get kids enrolled in school. The goal is to give the family the help they need to become independent in their new life.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide hope, healing, and a new home for a refugee family by welcoming them to Whidbey Island with open arms and sharing the love of Christ through compassionate, hands on service.

The Latest News from WhidbeyCARES!!

On September 26, 2023, we welcomed our first sponsored refugee family of four from Ukraine at SeaTac International airport. The father, a former farmer and experienced construction manager, holds an MBA and has a background in IT management, making him proficient in English. The mother is a Master’s graduate in telecommunications and successfully manages her online art and woolen goods business. Their family includes a vibrant five-year-old daughter and an energetic seven-year-old son.

Whidbey CAREs volunteers collaborated with Airbnb and Sponsor Circle to secure 30 days of complimentary housing in the heart of Oak Harbor. We provided them with essential groceries, monetary gift cards, and store vouchers, extending our support to help them apply for Social Security cards, enroll their children in school, and access various essential services. Presently, we are actively assisting them in their job search, facilitating their acquisition of a vehicle and a US-compatible cell phone, assisting with additional applications, and aiding in the quest for suitable long-term housing. We remain committed to offering ongoing support, including food and other essentials, as they transition to their new life.
